Extra-alveolar mini-implants have expanded the possibilities of orthodontic treatments, being used outside the dental roots, in two extra-alveolar regions. In the maxilla, the region is known as Infrazygomatic (IZC): external cortical, close to the zygomatic pillar and the zygomatic crest. In the mandible, the region is known as the Buccal Shelf (BS), an area close to the molars in the buccal region, along the external oblique line.
The extra-alveolar regions allow greater versatility of orthodontic movements, constituting a powerful tool as an absolute anchorage in the performance of difficult or complex tooth movements without interference with the roots of the teeth.
